Eligibility

All Texas public school districts and charter schools qualify. Funding is calculated per enrolled student. A district with 1,000 students receives approximately $50,000 to $70,000 per year in IMA funds alone.

  • Eligible: All Texas public school districts and charter schools
  • Funding calculated per enrolled student, every grade level
  • No competitive application required - automatic allocation
  • Funds can be used for TEKS-aligned instructional materials

Program Goals

The Texas Instructional Materials Allotment provides dedicated per-pupil funding for districts to purchase instructional materials. The program ensures every Texas student has access to current, appropriate learning resources. Funds are intended specifically for instructional materials - not general operations.

Districts do not need to buy from a state-approved list, though some prefer materials that have gone through the state adoption process. TEKS-aligned materials are the standard for eligibility.

Funding Distribution

The current IMA rate is approximately $50 to $70 per student, depending on grade level and the state budget cycle. A district with 1,000 students receives roughly $50,000-$70,000 annually. Funds accumulate in a district account and can be carried forward if not spent in a single year.

What Can Be Purchased

IMA funds are intended for instructional materials including textbooks, digital resources, and hands-on learning tools. STEM kits, coding curriculum, and physical computing materials that align to Texas TEKS standards are eligible. No special approval is required beyond TEKS alignment documentation.

Allowable Purchases

IMA funds can be used for any TEKS-aligned instructional materials. Physical computing kits with included curriculum that maps to Texas computer science and technology TEKS are eligible without additional approval.

Keep in Mind

Request a TEKS alignment document from Forward Education

Most districts want to see TEKS alignment before purchasing with IMA funds. Forward Education can provide a document showing how each kit maps to specific Texas standards.

IMA funds can be carried forward

Unspent IMA funds accumulate in your district account from year to year. Check your current IMA balance with the district's curriculum office - you may have more available than you realize.

No board approval required for IMA

Because IMA is a dedicated instructional materials fund, many districts can process purchases without a separate board vote. Confirm with your district's finance and curriculum teams.

Great for first-time STEM purchases

IMA is often the lowest-friction path for a first-time physical computing purchase. No grant application, no competitive process - just confirm TEKS alignment and place the order.
