Verizon Innovative Learning Schools
What This Grant Funds
Verizon Innovative Learning Schools provides free devices, connectivity, and digital skills curriculum to Title I middle schools across the United States, including Illinois. The program provides every student and teacher with a device, internet access, and a structured technology curriculum focused on digital skills, coding, and AI literacy.
Who Is Eligible in Illinois
Title I middle schools (grades 6-8) in Illinois are eligible. Schools must not already have 1:1 device programs. Priority is given to schools in communities with limited technology access. Illinois has numerous Title I middle schools in Chicago, Rockford, East St. Louis, and other high-need communities that are strong candidates.
Funding Amounts
The program value exceeds $1 million per school in devices, connectivity, and curriculum support over the multi-year program period. There is no cash grant — value is delivered in-kind as technology and curriculum resources.
How Forward Education Products Qualify
Verizon Innovative Learning provides a foundational technology infrastructure. Schools that receive VIL support can layer Forward Education micro:bit kits and MicroChat AI curriculum on top of the devices and connectivity Verizon provides, creating a comprehensive AI literacy and coding program that goes beyond the standard VIL curriculum.
How to Apply and Key Deadlines
Applications open annually at the Verizon Innovative Learning website. Eligible Title I middle schools can apply directly. The application requires school demographic data, device needs assessment, and principal commitment letters. Check Verizon's education programs page for current cycle dates.
Keep in Mind
VIL is one of the highest-value per-school programs available. Competition is high — applications must clearly demonstrate need and readiness to use the technology effectively. Have a curriculum integration plan ready before applying.
