What This Grant Funds

The Toshiba America Foundation funds STEM classroom projects for K-12 teachers. Grants are awarded to individual teachers for specific classroom projects — not school-wide programs. The foundation values innovative, hands-on STEM learning that goes beyond textbooks. Physical computing, coding, and science projects are commonly funded.

Who Is Eligible in Illinois

Any Illinois public or private K-12 school teacher can apply for a classroom project grant. There are no income or demographic requirements for the teacher or school. The grant is teacher-driven — individual educators apply for their own classroom projects.

Funding Amounts

K-6 grants go up to $5,000. Grades 6-12 grants go up to $10,000. Grants are project-specific — funds must be used for the described classroom project.

How Forward Education Products Qualify

A teacher-designed project using Forward Education micro:bit kits to teach coding, physical computing, or climate science fits Toshiba's model perfectly. The grant's classroom-level focus makes it ideal for purchasing a class set of micro:bit kits and designing a unit around them. The manageable funding cap keeps projects focused and achievable.

How to Apply and Key Deadlines

Applications for grades 6-12 are due February 1 and August 1. Grades K-6 applications are due April 1. Download the application from the Toshiba America Foundation website. Applications are simple — a project description, budget, and statement of how the project advances STEM learning. No letters of support required.

Keep in Mind

Toshiba grants are teacher-focused and classroom-specific. The foundation wants to fund a specific innovative lesson or unit — not a general technology purchase. Write your application around a clear, engaging student learning experience, not just equipment acquisition.
