What This Grant Funds

The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) Computer Science Education Grants support K-12 schools in expanding access to high-quality CS instruction. Funding covers curriculum development, teacher professional development, hardware, and software tools aligned to Illinois CS standards. The flagship CS Equity Grant program has awarded over $3 million to 72 recipients, prioritizing underrepresented populations and under-resourced schools.

Who Is Eligible in Illinois

Illinois public K-12 schools, school districts, regional offices of education (ROEs), and higher education institutions are eligible. Priority is given to schools with underrepresented student populations in CS, including girls, students from low-income households, students with disabilities, and rural schools. Nonprofit organizations partnering with eligible institutions may also qualify.

Funding Amounts

Grant amounts vary by program cycle. The CS Equity Grant has historically funded awards ranging from a few thousand dollars to over $50,000 per recipient. Total program funding has been approximately $3 million per cycle. Check isbe.net/cs for current solicitation details and award ranges.

How Forward Education Products Qualify

Forward Education's micro:bit kits and MicroChat AI curriculum align directly with ISBE CS standards. The micro:bit supports hands-on computational thinking, physical computing, and coding skills from grades 3 through 12. MicroChat AI curriculum prepares students for SB 1920 AI literacy guidance coming in July 2026. Forward Education can provide curriculum alignment documents and letters of support for grant applications.

How to Apply and Key Deadlines

Applications are submitted through the ISBE Grants Management System. The annual cycle typically opens in spring with awards announced in summer. Visit isbe.net/cs for current deadlines, required documents, and application instructions. Contact your regional ISBE office for pre-application guidance.

Keep in Mind

ISBE CS grants are competitive. Schools with strong partnerships, clear equity plans, and alignment to Illinois CS standards score higher. If you missed the current cycle, use the time to document student needs, align curriculum, and build relationships with your ROE before the next application opens.
