ComEd/Exelon STEM Education Grants
What This Grant Funds
ComEd, an Exelon company and Illinois's largest electric utility, funds STEM education programs that connect energy, technology, and community impact. Grants support curriculum, equipment, teacher professional development, and student programs in STEM fields including coding, physical computing, climate education, and clean energy.
Who Is Eligible in Illinois
K-12 schools, school districts, and nonprofits serving students within ComEd's service territory (northern Illinois, including the Chicago metro area) are eligible. Programs serving underrepresented populations, Title I schools, and underserved communities are prioritized. Organizations must demonstrate community impact and alignment to ComEd's educational goals.
Funding Amounts
Grants typically range from $5,000 to $50,000. Larger multiyear partnerships may exceed this range. Check comed.com/community for current award limits and program priorities.
How Forward Education Products Qualify
ComEd prioritizes STEM and clean energy education. Forward Education's Climate Action Kit — a micro:bit-powered environmental monitoring kit — directly addresses energy literacy and climate education goals ComEd values. The micro:bit physical computing kits support coding and technology skills ComEd seeks to develop in students across its service area.
How to Apply and Key Deadlines
Visit comed.com/community to find the current application portal. The grant cycle typically opens once annually. Applications require a project description, budget, and evidence of community need. Partner with your district's grants coordinator to ensure alignment with utility giving priorities.
Keep in Mind
ComEd giving is tied to its service territory — schools outside northern Illinois should look to Ameren Illinois instead. Programs with measurable student outcomes and a connection to energy literacy or STEM career pathways tend to score strongest.
