What This Grant Funds

The Best Buy Foundation funds Teen Tech Centers — free after-school spaces where teens get hands-on STEM and technology experiences — and STEM education grants for youth-serving organizations. Teen Tech Centers receive up to $1 million in setup and operational support. The foundation also funds smaller STEM grants for programs that teach coding, physical computing, and digital skills to youth in grades 6-12.

Who Is Eligible in Illinois

Youth-serving nonprofits, community centers, and school-based after-school programs in Illinois that serve teens in grades 6-12 are eligible. Organizations in Chicago and other major Illinois cities are well positioned for Teen Tech Center consideration given Best Buy's retail presence. Programs serving underrepresented youth are prioritized.

Funding Amounts

Teen Tech Center grants can reach $1 million over the program period. STEM education grants are smaller and vary by program. Check the Best Buy Foundation website for current grant programs and amounts.

How Forward Education Products Qualify

Best Buy Foundation values technology access and digital skills for underserved youth. Forward Education's micro:bit coding kits and MicroChat AI curriculum fit directly into a Teen Tech Center environment, providing structured physical computing and AI literacy activities for the teens these centers serve. Propose Forward Education tools as part of a Teen Tech Center application's curriculum plan.

How to Apply and Key Deadlines

Teen Tech Center applications are managed through Best Buy's community investment team. STEM grants use an online application process. Check the Best Buy Foundation website for current open cycles. Applications typically open in the fall for the following program year. Build relationships with Best Buy district managers in your area for introductions to the foundation team.

Keep in Mind

Teen Tech Centers are Best Buy's flagship investment — these are the most competitive and highest-value grants. Smaller STEM grants are more accessible for organizations that do not have the capacity for a full Teen Tech Center. Start with a smaller STEM grant to establish a relationship with the foundation.
